Summer Reads 2011

Did you catch Love Bites last night?  I loved every minute of it!  I rarely laugh out loud (for real, not LOL) unless I'm watching The Big Bang Theory but this had me laughing the entire hour.  You can watch the full episode here.

"If a man wants to read good books, he must make a point of avoiding bad ones; for life is short, and time and energy limited."
— Schopenhauer

Today I wanted to talk about what I'm going to read this summer.  The last few books I've read have been Self Improvement Books and I'm ready to just lose myself in a few books while drinking iced tea on my patio! I'd love to see all of you do a similar post so that we can all find new books to read.  And friend me on Good Reads if you haven't already!

Good Enough to Eat by Stacey Ballis is available on amazon, kindle and iBook.  I got my copy from Teri at Mighty M Family.  This is the story of Melanie...I woman who lost half her body weight, opened a gourmet cafe and then her husband left her for a fat chick.

I'm obsessed with Kate and Pippa Middleton so I will be reading book The American Heiress: A Novel by Daisy Goodwin. This is the story of Cora Cash, an American heiress in the 1890's who bags an English Duke.

Next is Burnt Mountain by Anne Rivers Siddons. It comes out on July 19th and is the story of Thayer Wentworth, a tomboy who grows up and returns to her old summer camp where she must confront dark secrets.

And lastly....because I'd love to escape to a beach this summer (but it's not going to happen) I'll be reading On Folly Beach by Karen White. This is the story of Emmy, a young woman who is getting over the loss of her husband. She buys a book store in Folly Beach, South Carolina. She finds love letters in the store that lead her to details of a possible murder and mysterious disappearance during WWII.

Edited to Add: I finished Good Enough to Eat in 24 hours...couldn't put it down! So I picked up a new read at Target just based on the cover and the blurb on the back. It's The Summer We Came to Life by Deborah Cloyed and I think I'm going to love it because it's about love and friendships and set on a beach. If you want this book when I'm done with it....shoot me an email or leave a comment.

Edited July 4th: I've added another book to my list!  I kept seeing friends on Good Reads reading this or putting it on their TO-READ list so when I was out at a REAL book store on Friday night...I saw it and I bought it.  Paid WAY too much for it...but I had to have it.  The book is Don't Breathe a Word: A Novel by Jennifer McMahon and it's kind of a scary mystery about a missing girl.

What are you reading this summer?

  1. I definitely need to put the American Heiress one on my list. I love me some royal wedding biz...especially when commoners wed royals, there is something so romatic about that.

I'll get right on that after my next smutty fan fic read. ;)

  2. I have not even read a book this year. Thats bad.

  3. I have to read that first one for sure!

  4. I'll put Love Bites on my to do list because the hubs and I adore the Big Bang Theory!!

  5. I'm putting all of these books on my list! I'm on Good Reads, are we friends yet? I have like 100 books on FB and I need to move em over!
    What's Love Bites??

  6. Just all of those to my summer read list!!! Thanks Connie! xoxo

  7. Oh, are we talking about books? I came over to talk about Tosh.0. I laugh out loud the whole time it's on. Don't tell, though. I am way to old and goody-goody to be watching that stuff.

    *summer read - US Magazine.

  8. i missed Love Bites...thanks for the link!! we love Big Bang funny!!

those all look like good reads.

  9. I too find the Middletons intriguing. I'll have to check out the American Heiress.

  10. I need some suggestions, I've got two trips planned for this summer which means plane time - and reading time! I know I will be passing some time with some smutty magazines. Does that count?

  11. That first novel sounds similar to a book I once read called Jemima J by Jane Greene. Have you read that one? I believe it was a pretty popular book a few years back!

  12. They all look wonderful!! Thanks for posting this. I am slowly making my way through a pile of self-help books but do need an escape right about now. I will do some hunting and post something similar soon :) Thanks!

  13. I'm going to add all the books on your list to mine!

I just finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, so I'm going to read the other 2 books in that series.

I also have Water for Elephants on my list.

At the library yesterday, I picked up Room by Emma Donoghue, Widow for a Year by John Irving and some book (can't remember the title) by Philippa Gregory. I haven't read any of her stuff sinve I read The Other Boleyn Girl a few summers ago, but it was a guilty pleasure, so I thought I'd try another one by her.

OH! I also read Little Bee by Chris Cleave last week. It's alright...

  14. Currently reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks because I'm a sucker for medical biography type stuff.

On the docket, however, is What's Up Down There by Lissa Rankin, MD (subtitled: Questions You'd Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend); The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; and A Visit from the Goon Squad.

  15. I just ordered Good Enough to Eat based on your rec. And (sadly) it was 97 cents plus shipping on Amazon, so it was cheaper to get the real book than the kindle edition. Next on my to read list is The Weird Sisters and Little Girls Can Be Mean. They sound related, but first is fiction and second non-fiction.

I love you. You are my best friend! Your hair looks fantastic today!
