The Book of Mormon

Oh my heck!

I'd forgotten how much iKeith and I love the theater.  When we were first dating he bought us season tickets and I was hooked!  We had a lovely brunch at Marlowe's on the 16th Street Mall that contained bottomless mimosas.  After buying some flip flops at H&M, we hurried to the theater and it was like we we're 33 and 40 again!

The Book of Mormon Musical is really funny.  It's even more funny if you lived in a very strict Mormon community and lived the musical.  Keith and I laughed more than anyone in our section because we had been there before.  Brother Horton trained us well!

There are so many funny parts, lots of f bombs, inappropriateness with frogs and irreverent humor.  The songs are so catchy that you'll be singing them for days.

Keith and I were delighted to discover that we could take drinks from the bar into the theater to enjoy during the show.  They had cocktails, wine, beer and coffee.  This is what we got.

One of our favorite scenes was the Spooky Mormon Hell Dream!  If featured giant cups of Starbucks and demons.  Of course, we also really liked the song about Sal Tlay Ka Siti (Salt Lake City) being the promised land and paradise.  If these poor people only knew.

Have you seen The Book of Mormon?

Making Twitter Friends Everywhere I Go

Hello Friends!  And Impulsive Addict and Seriously Shawn!

This week is already on my shitlist and it's only Tuesday.   Yesterday, my son who was sick all last week woke up crying because his ears hurt.  A trip to the doctor confirmed that he has a very bad ear infection. I also paid a $30 co-pay to have them check out my daughter who was also sick last week.  She's fine.

I just checked the What People Googled to Find My Blog list and found that someone has a burning question that only I can answer.

What happens when you put a tampon in the wrong hole.

The answer is.....it becomes a plug.

Speaking of things that don't belong.  Remember the little story I told you on Thursday about an altercation I was in?  I checked my calendar and I'm volunteering in the classroom with that woman on Friday. Awkward!

Saturday night I went on a date with my husband. One of his co-workers is competing to be Denver's Next Improv Star! We tried to get a drink (or 3) and a bite to eat at 5 different places. We got turned away over and over because everyone and their dog was eating dinner downtown that night. We did get a table at a place called CRAVE but it was a bar that served cake and I didn't think that was the best place to take a diabetic for dinner.

We raced all over downtown and finally ended up at Rock Bottom Brewery. I found the irony. We had reached Rock Bottom in our choices. Did I mention that all of this happened while Keith's boss with us?

We had a burger and drinks and listened to Dan tell us fascinating stories about Steve Jobs. And knowing me and how inappropriate I can be....I told him he should lay on our table so we could turn the beer tap on straight into his mouth. He said that he didn't get where he was by laying under things. I told him that I'm exactly where I am by laying under things. And then I called Keith my Sugar Daddy.

Once we were in our seats at the improv show....we smelled something. Something bad. I did what I always do when I smelling something bad and I told twitter.

The guy behind me....was reading my phone over my shoulder and told me it wasn't him.   And asked me to retract my tweet.

Guy behind me who DID NOT FART took to twitter to make sure the world all 12 of his followers knew and included a picture of the person who he thought was responsible.  That person is my husband's boss.

I laughed so hard that I peed my pants!  And the show hadn't even started yet!  I am now twitter friends with Michelin.  So now he has 13 friends.

The show was very funny and our friend made it to the next round.

Good Luck Break Your Leg Lindsay!

Adventures with Robert:Dating My Brother in Law

A few weeks ago, my brother husband in law Robert asked me out on a date.  He asked me to find something for us to do together so I picked a play...because you know how much I love the theater!  He gave me his credit card and I booked some tickets to Circle Mirror Transformation at Curious Theatre.  I'm in love with this place and I've seen every show this season...and I'm planning to see many more!

Rob picked me up and told me he was going to surprise me with a restaurant.  Then he drove to Wendy's.

He was kidding of course and drove around the corner to Le Central French Restaurant!! I almost peed my pants because i was so excited!  We had had a conversation about this place a few weeks earlier and he remembered!

I like to be adventurous when I'm eating so I tried many things that I'd never had before...like Escargot and Mussels.  To see details of what we ate...visit The Rookie Foodie.

We shared most of the dishes so we could try more menu items and we were both stuffed.

Something About Mary..

Robert was wearing too much clothing...making him a little hot and ended up making his hair stick straight up.  I called him Mary the rest of the night.  We also drank an entire bottle of wine.

I ordered this for dessert not knowing that Robert doesn't like Chocolate.  He took one bite...I got the rest.

We finally made it to the play.  Circle Mirror Transformation is about five people that take a 6 week drama class and through a series of well known acting exercises get to know each other.  It all takes place in a Rec Center type room with limited props.  During the play, we learn about each character as they tell each other's story.  It was very interesting and as always...I loved every minute of it.

Robert wanted to go dancing after the show but since I don't wear my stilettos very often...my feet were swelling up like a pregnant chick eating Wendy's fries.  Instead we went to The Yard House for one last drink.

I'm getting to old to party past 11pm.  I wouldn't have made it anyway!

Blue Christmas

Two months ago, iKeith and I decided that the kids were old enough to see a theater performance.  I've been waiting for this day for so long and vividly remember sitting in the Buell Theater 8 months pregnant and dreaming about the day we'd be there with our family!

The Blue Man Group would be our first performance as a family!

The kids have been excited...asking almost every day if it was time to see The Blue Heads.  And then they were confused by the MEGAMIND movie and thought he was a part of the The Blue Heads.

Finally...it was time and we dressed up and headed downtown.  It was Kid's Night on Broadway so there were activities for the kids before the show but my kids were just interested in sitting at the bar on the top level and looking out into the parking garage.

We are very excited!

Too Much Hot Chocolate

The show was very loud. Probably too loud for Mallory who is very sensitive to noise...except when she is making it.  She spent the majority of the show on my lap with my giant Victoria Secret enhanced boobs covering her ears.  I was to the point if she yelled, 'I WANT TO GO HOME!' one more time I was going to take my bra off and wrap it around her head.

Alex thought it was the greatest thing he's ever seen and can't wait to go again.  He thinks they come to Denver every single Christmas.  He was so excited that he made me buy Captain Crunch (which they are calling CRAPtain Crunch for some reason) and told the nice lady at Wal Mart all about the show.

Mommy and Daddy....loved it!  We really liked how they got the audience excited by having us read these prompters out loud.  It's a high energy show and just the expressions on their faces make you laugh.  My abs still hurt from all the laughing. And I now have a craving for Twinkies!

My kids made a short video for you this morning....and Mallory has mostly forgotten that she left the theater crying.  Apparently, seeing the Big Blue Heads is a lot like labor...you forget the pain by the next day.

Come back Tuesday when I'll be explaining why (with pictures) I won't be entering the apartment decorating contest in my complex.

Full Moon or Astronomical Sunset?

Last week, I saw a tweet from Curious Theatre that said they were selling tickets to a sneak peek of their latest play Astronomical Sunset for $10.  I got so excited because we can't afford to go to The Theatre very often because tickets are usually $40-$100.

I immediately started texting my Brother In Law to see if he could watch the kids for me so that iKeith and I could attend.  I haven't utilized Family Babysitting as much as I could have because they make me feel like I'm asking to borrow $7500.  Finally...after much back and forth....he agreed!

I bought the tickets and then sent an iChat message to iKeith and told him about our iDate.  And I sent him a link to the description of the play and he wrote me back and said:

iKeith: PLEASE NOTE: This production contains a brief moment of male nudity.

Connie the Great*: Oh....

iKeith: Did you know about this.

Connie the Great: No, I didn't realize....

iKeith: Where are our seats?

Connie the Great: Second Row Center.  :P

iKeith: Wonderful

In fact, I DID NOT know because I didn't read the fine print and frankly, I'm surprised that he did.

We had a great night!  We started with Family Dinner at my in laws were a fight broke out about politics and I wrote my mother in law out of my will.  The conversation then went on to Halloween candy and Robert informed us that each little candy bar contains 50 or more calories.  We all talked about how hard it is to resist the candy before the big day and then my mother in law told a bald face lie and said she eats ONE LITTLE CANDY BAR a week.  I call bullshit.

Finally it was time for us to go and we stopped at 240 Union for a glass of wine and I got to see the bar stool where iKeith was sitting the night that the mystery woman picked him up and brought him to Little Bear.

We arrived at Curious Theatre Company and the set looked great!  It was a living room...in a cabin in the woods. Sitting so close to the stage it felt like we were sitting IN the living room!

The play was great to watch near Halloween!  Creepy, suspenseful and kind of confusing. I'm not a seasoned play goer yet so it takes me a while to understand some things that happen during the show.  I usually figure them out as iKeith and I discuss it.  He's also really good at analyzing plots.

The bonus of this sneak peek was that we got to stay after and chat with the assistant director and one of the script writers.  They asked us what we liked about the play and what we didn't like or understand.  They also explained some things to us that I didn't get right away.  It was a wonderful experience!

One thing they asked us was about the male nudity.  Actually....I was quite surprised to realize that I was uncomfortable with it and it probably didn't need to be in the play. I also told them that I see that every day in my OWN living room.  iKeith was thrilled!

If you live in Colorado and you want to see a really great play at an adorable little theatre....Astronomical Sunset by Robert Lewis Vaughan is playing November 6-December 4.  And if you go and Jim doesn't strip down to his birthday suit...I'm sorry, that's probably my fault.

*I have my iChat name set to Connie the Great so that when I log in and out when iKeith is at work he hears...Connie the Great is now available.

What IS Second City?

Last week I won tickets to a show on twitter. I love twitter!!

The contest was put on by Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the tickets were for The Second City Comedy show.  I'd been hearing good things about it and it was on my wish list of shows I wanted to see.

I was so excited when I won the tickets because you know how much I love the theater AND I love to laugh!  We started off by having drinks at The Corner Office...right across the street from the Garner Galleria Theatre and we had the pleasure of having Alex for a bartender.

I was having a lovely time until we discovered that Alex was old young enough to be my son.  It was then that I realized I really need to stop flirting with bartenders because it's now becoming inappropriate.

We arrived at the Second City Show and found out that you can drink through the entire show!  I drowned my sorrows in Merlot and we made friends with the people that we were seated with.  We found out that they were there to celebrate their 6th wedding anniversary.

The show is very funny and I highly recommend it to anyone...unless you are easily offended.  If you can take a joke and let things roll off your back...then you should see this show.  If you are a member of The Tea Party...you should stay home.

There was a wonderful improv part of the show where they used this older gentleman from the audience and built the skit around his answers to a series of questions.  It was so hilarious that my stomach is sore today from laughing.

As the show was wrapping up and the actors were getting ready to do their last number.  My husband hollers up to the stage and asks WHAT DOES SECOND CITY MEAN?

I was really thankful that we were seated at tables so that I could crawl under ours.  My husband is a very smart man....how could he not know what Second City is?  The actor that was on stage answered his question and moved on....and then the rest of the cast came out and were looking out into the crowd to see who the simpleton was.

I joked around with my new friend Lori that we've both been married for 6 years and it's extremely obvious which one of us has two small children at home.  Look how fabulous she looks!

Can you tell that I'm drunk pants?

After the show...we asked our new friends to come have a drink at one of our favorite bars and we ended up telling them our dating story....in a he said/ she said fashion.  We think they liked us...because they asked for our phone number.  I hope they call...and that Lori wasn't offended when iKeith called her Cher.  If I could turn back time....

Keith and I are officially on the prowl for friends!

How I Spent My 40th Birthday

We started the day at the Rocky Mountain PBS Kid's Fun Fest.  It's the biggest free family party in Colorado!  There is a bouncy house, a climbing wall, a stage coach, an Urban Farm (aka...petting zoo) and guest appearances from Curious George, The Cat in the Hat and Clifford the Big Red Dog.  I won't tell you how many children I had to knock down to get my picture with Clifford.

There was an incident at the bounce house that has our house divided at the moment.  After I tell you about it...please take the poll on the right hand sidebar.  We were waiting in line for the bounce house for around 30 minutes.  It was one of the most popular attractions there and the kids were being very well behaved even though we had to stand in the sun.  Mallory was so excited because it was her first time to enjoy the pleasure of the bounce house. Finally...we were next and we were about to step up onto the mat to remove the kids shoes when a woman came running up with 3 kids and cut in line.  Her husband had been standing in line in front of us for his family.

I told my children (rather loudly) that I was sorry but they were not NEXT.  The Dad said he was sorry but that his kids won't stand in line that long.  I told him that my kids had to...why shouldn't his.  And then iKeith told the Dad that we understand...blah blah blah.  I thought it was incredibly rude and inconsiderate to all of us that waited in line and that it teaches HIS children that they don't have to wait, or do any work to get what they want.  What do you think?

And then I flashed about 30 people who were waiting in line to sit in the Stage Coach. When Alex sat on my lap...about 4 of my buttons slipped out of their holes and when I got out of the stage coach my shirt was unbuttoned to my waist!! Oops.

As we were walking back to the car we saw this on the sidewalk and I got really excited about how iKeith and I were going to celebrate my birthday later that night.

Clever Advertising!
Uncle Andrew babysat the kids for us and we started the evening at Sketch Wine Bar.  click here to see pictures and details about what we ate. It's a really fun wine bar in a historic neighborhood in Denver.  We had a great time drinking wine and magic sangria, eating meat and cheese and talking to people that came and sat at the bar.

Soon it was time to head over to the Curious Theater to see Dead Man's Cell Phone. It's a community theater but with amazing professional actors, that has made it's home inside an old church that was built in 1880.  It is a cozy and intimate setting with an orchestra and balcony area.   Curious is in their 13 year and they have been awarded a Best Theater Award by 5280 Magazine.

We were 6th row center which was perfect!  I was so happy and excited because this was only my second play.  I've seen many, many musicals but only one play....this was one reason that I really wanted to see a stage performance for my birthday.  Because you know I'm all about trying new things.

I loved the play!  Seeing a story unfold with real people right before your eyes is an exciting experience.  This is an odd ball comedy about a mousey woman that discovers the man at the table next to her has died and his cell phone is ringing...and ringing.  This woman takes it upon herself to keep answering his cell phone as she informs people that call of this man's passing and she begins to tell stories to help comfort the people he's left behind.  She also becomes accepted into the dead man's family and helps them deal with their loss....even though she's mostly lying to them.

It was opening night so as part of our theater experience we were invited to an after party with the cast.  I was scared to go inside but iKeith convinced me that I'd be sorry if I let my fear of walking to a room full of strangers stop me.

I'm so glad I went!  I was able to meet and talk to all of the cast, the director and the owner of the theater.  I even walked right up to a gal and talked to her because she was wearing knee high socks and ended up having a wonderful conversation with her.

William Hahn plays the Dead Man
Emily Davies plays the mousey woman.
Scott Bellot plays Dead Man's Brother
It was the perfect birthday!  I'm so glad that I had this experience on my 40th birthday....it's a night I'll not soon forget and I'm excited that we found this theater because we can't wait to go back and see more plays there.
