For the last three years, I've successfully discarded every American Girl Doll catalog that has made it's way to my mailbox.
I've sheltered my impressionable daughter from the phenomenon of a doll that looks kind of like her with matching clothes and pony.
I brought the mail in the other day but didn't go through it right away and to my dismay....this little gem of a catalog was lurking just below my credit card bill and an LUCKY Magazine. Mallory found it and read all of the words she knows on the cover GIRL, STAR and FREE.
I tried to distract her with candy so that I could hide the shiny pages from her but she's too smart for me.
She found so many things that she loved inside and I tried to tell her that the items are very expensive and she should not get too excited. And she should get a job.
She reminded me that Daddy spends lots of money on LEGOS and that she needs to have something that is for her. When did she get so smart?
Then I saw it.
A doll that looked EXACTLY like 5 year old Connie (before my Mom cut all of my hair off) and MY BIKE!! I had that exact bike with the same basket and streamers on the handle bars!
I WANT THAT DOLL AND THAT BIKE!
I guess I better get a job......
Note: The Banana Seat Bike is $100 and backordered until AUGUST 31ST! Also, kids didn't often wear bike helmets in the 1970's. Please wear a helmet whenever YOU ride.
They have the cutest things. But Hannah got a doll a couple years ago and she couldn't even tell you where it is now. So I try to "recycle" the catalogs right away too.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny! I showed it to my daughter and tried to get her into them!!! I'd prefer one expensive doll and accessories to the million My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, etc that clutter my house now!! Lily showed absolutely NO interest. Not even when she saw the cute stuff her cousin has with her dolls.
ReplyDeleteThink about the high point? You can spend a day in the American Girl store with your daughter, pay ridiculous money to have tea with the doll and your child ... and make a day out of it!! I would honestly love to do that with my kid. Unfortunately, she would just be dragging something from Build a Bear in there!!!
Lol! I so remember the first time I received a barbie, (I was raised on a ranch in the middle of nowhere and didn't even have a tv till I was 17) it was Christmas and I think I was 7.....I had shaved her head by the time dinner was served and made her into a soldier.
ReplyDeleteMy poor mother.
ughhh Maggie is OBSESSED with AG dolls. and doesn't treasure them but really really loves on them. case in point: I once spent nearly an hour finger combing vomit chunks out of Molly's hair before taking a pair of scissors to it. no collectibles in this house ;)
ReplyDeleteI had the Samantha doll when I was little. I think that was before you could customize your doll to look like you. Samantha was the closest one they had. :o)
ReplyDeleteSo I finally broke down and got on Pinterest and followed you. You are a pinning machine!!!!! :o) When I get some time, I'm going to raid your boards for inspiration...
LOVE!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously. I have 2 boys. No AG stuff here in this hizzouse. But.
One day I got one of those magazines for some reason.
I fell in love.
And now? My BFF got her little girl one for Christmas. And is taking her to the AG doll store in Seattle in June.
And it was all my idea and I'm going. Because I'm AWESOME. Or lame.
sounds like you just found a great Santa gift!! I'm hoping my girls don't learn about this American Girl craze-- although I did just buy a stinkin' cabbage patch doll that meant more to me than it did for my daughter, so maybe I'll get one eventually for them...
ReplyDeletei was never much into dolls so i guess i'm lucky to have been blessed with a boy legos and hot wheels i understand
ReplyDeleteOh we went through this when the AG store opened in Dallas - we ended up with 3 dolls! THREE!! And TONS of stuff - beds, scooters, cheerleading crap, crutches, glasses, ice skates....we had it all! They are absolutely adorable but terribly expensive.
ReplyDeleteShe played with everything for about 1 year and then it sat in a storage container for another 3.
She sold it all in December to raise $$$ for her iPad!
HA!

I have always wanted an American Girl doll and as God as my witness, I er um, Claire will get one.
ReplyDeleteLOOK AT THAT BIKE!
ReplyDeleteI had one like that, too! Banana seat, basket and all!
God, I loved having that little basket up front. I was so cool.
Gone are the days though.

We made my husband go into the American Doll store once and he could not believe the prices and wondered why anyone would spend that much on a doll.
ReplyDeleteA few years back the doll of the year was a red headed doll-- needless to say my mom bought it for Alex and it saving it for probably one more year when she is old enough to take good care of it.
They should bring back the My Buddy doll. I loved having a son. And you could get him at Walmart and I guaranty his bike would not cost over $10!
ReplyDeleteYou make me laugh.....100 for a doll bike?? CRAZY! I think you could get the original Connie bike for WAY less ;) I am hoping to hide these catalogs from Lil C as she gets older....I'd have to remortgage my house to be able to afford all of the accessories and clothes.
ReplyDeleteI think you should scout Craigslist until you find the actual bike. It might cost about the same amount as the doll and tiny fake bike. Mooch has one of those dolls which she has never played with. Not once. Also: damn you were cute. I was very scary-looking in the seventies.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh now I need to see a picture of yourself and this bike to compare!
ReplyDeleteI will tell my son to get a job too when he tells me he wants something!
Oh, both of my girls LOVED American Girl dolls. I think this one swiped my bike...banana seat and all! There was one named Julie a few years ago who was my exact age. I loved her and wanted her for myself!
